This is probably one of the most useful patterns to learn. You can find out more in the lesson on Pentatonics on the blackboard in the Virtual Music Room.

The notes you need to learn are e g a b d e'

These can be layed in lots of different places on the fingerboard.

1st Position:

e

g

a

b

d

e'(high e)

Practise playing these notes in as many different orders as you can.

When your hand moves up the fingerboard we say it has changed to a different position.

1st position is when the first finger would fall on the 1st fret. 3rd position when it would be on the 3rd fret, 5th position = 1st finger on the 5th fret and so on.

How about learning this version of the Em pentatonic which starts in 8th position, moving up to 10th position to finish.

e'

g'

a'

b'

d'

e''(higher e)

Using all of the notes from the E minor pentatonic scale e, g, a, b and d you can once more add to your ideas when improvising along with the chord sequence from Guitar Lesson 3.

Don't forget to try singing the notes as as you play them.

If you get any really good ideas play them a few times to see if you can remember them and then store them in your head for using again some time.
