Pluck the top e stringto play an e.

Pluck it with the 1st finger on the 3rd fret to play g.

Add the 3rd finger on fret 5 to make the note a.

Practise playing these three notes in as many different ways as you can.

When you are confident at making up patterns using e, g and a, try adding in the note d on the second string.

How many more patterns can you make up now?

Using the notes e, g, a and d you can carry on improvising along with the chord sequence from Guitar Lesson 3.

Just make up patterns that fit in with the beat.

Some notes should sound like they fit better than others. The e when the Em chord is playing and the a works well with the Am chord. The other notes can be used to add interest. Just try experimenting and have fun with the backing track.

You could try singing the notes as well when you get used to their pitch.
