For some styles of playing a pick is used. This is mainly used in a free style. It means that you have one pick to play the strings with instead of three fingers and a thumb. Some styles of music are composed to be played with a pick so sound best when performed this way.

The hand that plays the strings has two basic finger srokes.
Apoyando (Spanish for rest stroke) - the fingers push down the string and rest on the next string.

This image shows Tirando (Spanish for free stroke).
The fingers play the string then stay in mid-air until they are needed to play again.
